For the next few days, Cora locked herself in the Repository once again and pored through the countless volumes, doing her best to take Sylvieâs advice and learn the histories down to the granular level. Cora ignored the outside worldâbut was mostly ignoring Highsmith. She sent his calls straight to voicemail and didnât bother returning any of the myriad of text messages heâd sent her. She was consumed by her work, but she was still pissed and didnât feel like talking to him.
Eventually, though, Cora needed fresh air and to be somewhere other than the underground bunker, so sheâd gotten bolder about borrowing things from the Repository and taking them back to her hotel where sheâd set up a war room. Duncan hadnât said anything to her about it, so she assumed it was all right. And if it wasnât, she figured sheâd hear about it. Sheâd plead ignorance and apologize profusely when and if that happened.
One wall of her room had been dedicated to her projectâpictures, pages, and newspaper accounts of events sheâd found in the histories that correlated with events that had happened in Storyville. What she found indicated that Sylvie had put her on the right path about there being a long history between people with abilities like hers and catastrophic events in and around Storyville. There were still quite a few missing puzzle pieces and dots left to connect, but Cora thought she was starting to see the bigger picture. Or at least, she was starting to cut through the opacity and would be able to see it soon enough.
Cora stood back, her arms folded over her chest, looked at her wall, and frowned, realizing she was a few strands of yarn from looking like a full-blown, tin-foil-hat-wearing conspiracy theorist. Her logical mind kicked in, and she could see how this wall might look to an outsider. It would look insane. But the more she looked at it, the more she couldnât deny the pattern. Storyville was ground zero for strange and possibly even cataclysmic happenings.
Over the course of her life, Cora had never given much thought to the end times, the end of days, or whatever people called it. Sheâd never really thought about the end of the world as she knew it. What Cora was struggling with at the moment was what that meant. What Sylvie had said in the clearing by the well had resonated with her. She had allowed herself to be caught up in the dichotomy of good versus evil. Of seeing the Seers as the darkness to the light of the Sentinels. But Sylvieâs words continued echoing through her mind, and it made her question whether that sort of binary thinking was a terrible and unjust oversimplification.
The histories sheâd read as well as some of the philosophical thoughts penned by the Watchers put some of what Sylvie had said in context for her. Having done this job for as long as she had, and seeing some of the worst humanity
